Diving atSecca Isuela (Italy)

Secca Isuela, found within Italy's Portofino National Marine Reserve, has long been a key site for understanding Mediterranean marine ecosystems. This submerged sea mountain, located offshore from Punta Chiappa, has attracted divers for decades due to its striking underwater topography and diverse aquatic inhabitants. The area's protected status helps maintain the rich biodiversity observed today. Its distance from the coast contributes to a remarkable flourishing of species.

Early observations for Secca Isuela report a surface air temperature of 21°C. The water surface is currently presenting wave heights of 1.2 m. Consider these environmental metrics before beginning your descent.

Dive Site Overview

Rising dramatically from approximately 60 m (197 ft) to a cap between 13 to 15 m (43 to 49 ft) below the surface, Secca Isuela presents a commanding underwater mountain. This substantial geological structure, along with its smaller companion Isuelita, forms an extensive reef system offshore.

Descending along the main catenary typically guides divers to the flat top plateau of the main secca. From this elevated position, the terrain rapidly transforms into impressive vertical walls. These drop significantly towards the maximum depth, revealing a complex underwater landscape.

A natural saddle, found at roughly 40 meters, connects Isuela to Isuelita, creating an intriguing blue water crossing for appropriately certified divers when visibility permits. The south and west faces of Isuelita feature a steep vertical drop approaching 54 meters.

Conversely, sections oriented towards the mainland and the saddle offer a more gradual, shallower descent, yet remain equally engaging. Across these diverse depths, the slopes are notably rich in various sponge and vibrant coral formations, defining much of the seascape.

While certified tech divers explore the deeper environs, recreational diving focuses on a depth range generally not exceeding 30-35 meters.

Best Time to Dive

Diving conditions at Secca Isuela exhibit notable seasonal contrasts. While summer months, from May to October, consistently offer favorable conditions, the site remains accessible and rewarding outside of this peak period. Water temperatures during summer typically range from 22-26°C (72-79°F), gradually cooling to 12-16°C (54-61°F) in winter. Rainfall is generally minimal during the core summer months, with July averaging only 2.32 mm. Conversely, October sees a higher average rainfall of 11.19 mm, potentially impacting surface conditions. Wave heights are lowest in late summer, around 0.6 meters in August, but can increase to 1.3 meters during January. Wind speeds also tend to be lower during summer, increasing in cooler months. Dive scores indicate "Good" conditions for much of the year, particularly from March to September, with October often rated "Moderate" due to the changing weather patterns.

Dive Experience & Conditions

Approaching Secca Isuela, divers often feel the distinct openness of an offshore site, making a boat entry the standard. Visibility here is typically good, allowing clear views of the expansive underwater formations. The primary challenge reported by divers involves variable currents, which can shift from weak to strong, demanding advanced skills for effective navigation. Descending the main line to the cap at 13-15 meters provides a tangible sense of the rock's scale. Below this plateau, the site becomes a wall dive, where divers can experience the sensation of floating alongside vibrant vertical rock faces. During periods of stronger flow, observing marine life requires more effort, as creatures often seek shelter. The experience can range from a tranquil exploration of the shallower parts to a dynamic drift along deeper sections.

Dive Difficulty & Safety Guidelines

Managing the potentially strong and variable currents is the primary safety consideration when planning a dive at Secca Isuela. Due to its exposed, offshore location, this site is generally recommended for more experienced divers. Operators frequently advise descending along a fixed catenary to the cap, helping to mitigate surface currents upon entry. Divers must carry a natural permit required for diving within the Portofino National Marine Reserve. It's advisable to carefully monitor conditions before and during the dive, particularly regarding current strength and direction. Maintaining a maximum recreational depth of 35 m (115 ft) is generally recommended, although deeper sections are accessible to certified technical divers with appropriate planning and breathing mixes. Always dive with a reputable local guide who understands the site's specific behaviors.

Recommended Equipment

  • Dive Computer

This gear list is based on verified equipment signals for Secca Isuela, Italy. Always confirm final gear choices with your dive operator, guide, or liveaboard.

Recommended Dive Suit

Divers planning relaxed exploration may appreciate the warmth of 3-5mm wetsuit. Consider warmer surface protection (like a boat coat) due to brisk winds. Surface intervals may feel cooler. Divers often notice that perceived temperature can feel cooler during deeper or longer dives.

At the moment, divers exploring Secca Isuela will likely experience water temperatures near 22°C (72°F). Surface air temperatures are resting at 21°C (70°F).

Temperatures look set to gradually increase over the next several days. A warming trend is expected over the next few days.
