About the Bogue

The Bogue, Boops boops, is a common sight for divers across the Eastern Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Black Seas. This sleek member of the seabream family, Sparidae, is characterized by its torpedo-shaped, elongated body and remarkably large eyes, a feature that gives the genus its name, deriving from ancient Greek for 'ox eye'. You'll often observe a silvery body, typically adorned with subtle dark stripes along its flanks.

Growing up to a maximum published length of 40 centimeters (16 inches), the Bogue is the larger of its genus species. These active fish are frequently encountered in shallow coastal waters, where they typically form gregarious schools. Observing a synchronized school of these attractive fish moving in unison offers a memorable glimpse into their vibrant marine environment.
