Dive Site Overview

Calm conditions typically characterize diving at the P-31, a former Armed Forces of Malta patrol boat resting almost upright on a white sandy bottom off Comino's west coast. This substantial vessel, 52 m (171 ft) long and 7 m (23 ft) wide, was deliberately scuttled in 2009 to serve as a new diving attraction and artificial reef.

At its deepest, the bow section reaches approximately 18-20 m (59-66 ft), with the stern slightly shallower around 18 m (59 ft) after some storm-induced shifting. Visible even to snorkelers, the highest point, including its mast, comes within 7 m (23 ft) of the surface.

Originally a Kondor I class minesweeper known as Pasewalk for the East German navy, it transitioned to Malta in 1992. Divers can easily navigate its exterior, and many sections were intentionally opened, allowing for swim-throughs from stern to bow.

Be aware the engine room holds a noticeable amount of sand. Found in the middle of a bay between Lantern Point and Cominotto, access is exclusively by boat.

Best Time to Dive

Optimal seasonal planning for P-31 dives generally aligns with Malta's calmer summer and autumn. June through October typically offers the best conditions, yielding "Good" dive scores, with lower wave heights averaging 0.68-0.99 m (2-3 ft) and lighter winds around 21-27 km/h (13-17 mph). Warmest air temperatures, ranging from 22-26°C (72-79°F), prevail in these months, and rainfall is minimal or non-existent. In contrast, cooler periods from January to May and November to December receive a "Moderate" rating for diving. During these times, divers might encounter higher waves, between 1.11-1.83 m (4-6 ft), stronger winds averaging 29-39 km/h (18-24 mph), and increased rainfall from 0.67-2.98 mm. Boat access can become more weather-dependent, and air temperatures drop to 15-20°C (59-68°F), necessitating thicker exposure protection.

Dive Experience & Conditions

Divers approaching P-31 will typically find very favorable conditions for wreck exploration. Good ambient light often penetrates, aided by the wreck's orientation and relatively shallow maximum depth, generally around 18-20 m (59-66 ft). Though no consistent current data is reported, the site is usually considered calm, but local variations can occur. Expect excellent visibility, frequently offering clear views of the entire vessel. Dive boats usually anchor directly above or very close to the wreck, allowing for a comfortable giant stride or back roll entry. A prepared state, with many potential hazards removed or welded shut, ensures safe interior penetration for appropriately trained divers, featuring clear exit points. Even dives without penetration allow for extensive exterior exploration and appreciation of its developing artificial reef.

Dive Difficulty & Safety Guidelines

While P-31 offers a relatively safe wreck diving experience, adhering to standard safety practices remains crucial. This vessel was specifically prepared for divers; potential dangers were removed, and tight areas sealed, fostering a secure exploration environment. Nevertheless, gas management and no-decompression limits require careful attention, particularly for divers choosing penetration. Always dive with a buddy. For interior exploration, proper training and equipment for overhead environments are essential. Accessing this site is exclusively via boat, necessitating coordination with a reputable local operator. As with all dives, respecting the marine environment is paramount: refrain from touching or collecting anything from the wreck or its surroundings. P-31 is a protected artificial reef, prohibiting disturbance of its structure or resident marine life.
