About the Black Durgon

The black durgon, Melichthys niger, is a common and distinctive triggerfish found throughout circumtropical waters. While appearing uniformly black from a distance, closer inspection reveals a mottled dark-blue/green coloration, sometimes with orange near the head. A key identifying feature is the bright white lines prominently running along its dorsal and anal fins. This blimp-shaped fish also possesses the ability to subtly change its color to better match its immediate environment.

Divers typically encounter these fish in open waters, shallows, and along exposed reef areas, ranging from 5 to 35 meters (15 to 115 feet) in depth. Growing to an average of 12 inches, though capable of reaching up to 18 inches, the black durgon is a consistent presence in locations from Hawaii across the Indo-Pacific and Red Sea.
