About the Leafy Seadragon

Found exclusively along the southern and western coasts of Australia, the leafy seadragon is a marine fish unique in its appearance and movement. These delicate creatures typically reach 20–24 cm (8–9.5 in), making them slightly larger than most seahorses. Their elaborate, leaf-like skin protrusions are not used for propulsion but serve as a masterful form of camouflage, helping them blend seamlessly into their surroundings.

Movement is achieved through nearly transparent pectoral fins on the sides of its neck and a dorsal fin on its back. These small fins undulate minutely, allowing the seadragon to drift sedately through the water, completing the illusion of floating seaweed. Beyond their intricate lobes, the leafy seadragon can also change its body colour to enhance its disguise. This ability is influenced by factors such as its diet, age, and specific location. Maintaining a largely solitary lifestyle, these unique fish feed by sucking up small crustaceans and plankton with their long, pipe-like snout.
