What Divers Should Know About
Northern Pike

Northern pike typically inhabit freshwater environments across the Northern Hemisphere, preferring shallow, weedy places in lakes and reservoirs, sluggish streams, or cold, clear, rocky waters. Rich submerged vegetation is essential for these fish, providing both ambush cover and shelter for young. While predominantly freshwater dwellers, pike are also encountered in the brackish waters of the Baltic Sea, often near river mouths or in the open sea. Their olive green bodies, often shading to yellow or white along the belly, feature short, light bar-like spots on the flanks and dark spots on their fins, with younger individuals displaying yellow stripes.

These impressive fish commonly average 40–55 cm (16–22 in) in length, though individuals can reach an astounding 150 cm (59 in) and weigh up to 28.4 kg (63 lb). Observing a pike reveals its distinctive predatory behavior. They are master ambush hunters, lying perfectly still for extended periods by subtly moving their dorsal and pectoral fin rays. When prey comes into range, they exhibit remarkable acceleration, propelling themselves forward with powerful caudal, dorsal, and anal fin movements to strike. This precise control allows them to remain stationary, waiting for the opportune moment.
