Dive Safety Protocols

Rules are written in blood. Review these essential safety guidelines before your next trip.

The Golden Rule

Never, ever hold your breath.

As you ascend, the air in your lungs expands. Holding your breath during an ascent, even from a depth of just a few meters, can cause severe lung overexpansion injuries. Always breathe continuously while on SCUBA.

Buddy Check (BWRAF)

B—CD / Buoyancy

Check that the inflator hose connects, and test the inflate/deflate buttons. Ensure all dump valves work.

W—eights

Confirm the weight belt or integrated weights are secure but can be quickly ditched in an emergency.

R—eleases

Check all clips, straps, and buckles on the BCD. Know how to take off your buddy's equipment.

A—ir

Verify the valve is fully open. Check the SPG while taking breaths from primary and alternate regulators.

F—inal Ok

Mask, fins, snorkel, dive computer on? Give the signal.

Environmental Rules

  • Look, Don't Touch: Do not harass, ride, or poke marine life.
  • Watch Your Fins: Coral grows extremely slowly. A single careless fin kick can destroy decades of growth.
  • Streamline Gear: Ensure gauges and octopuses are clipped securely and not dragging across the reef.

Personal Limits

  • Plan your dive, dive your plan: Stick to the agreed-upon depth and time limits.
  • Anyone can thumb the dive: If you or your buddy feel uncomfortable, end the dive without question.
  • Stay within your training: Don't enter caves or wrecks without specialized overhead environment training.
