Everything you need to know about this dive site.
Dive Site Overview
An imposing limestone formation, Fungus Rock—also known as Mushroom Rock or General's Rock—stands prominently at the entrance of Dwejra Bay. This massive islet rises 60 meters above sea level, signaling a substantial underwater presence.
On the open sea side, the bottom drops steeply, plunging to depths exceeding 60 meters (200 ft). This creates a dramatic wall dive environment, contrasting sharply with the sheltered bay. Inside Dwejra Bay, shallower sections range between 8 and 14 meters, where intricate reef structures border both sides of the rock.
Exploring these areas reveals a labyrinth of vertical walls and a scattered boulder field near the base of the rock. Divers will navigate around these large formations, discovering small caverns and accessible swim-throughs carved into the ancient limestone.
Further inland, numerous fissures and gulleys, resembling miniature canyons, segment the terrain, providing varied routes for exploration. A notable cave at 14 meters depth also extends significantly inward, inviting further investigation.
Its diverse underwater landscape makes it suitable for advanced certification levels, challenging divers with its varied topography and potential for deeper exploration.

Dive Experience & Conditions
Descending into the waters surrounding Fungus Rock, divers initially encounter the sheltered environment of Dwejra Bay. Recreational depths here allow for exploring shallower reefs, providing a gentle start to the dive. Moving to the open sea side, the site reveals its dramatic steep drop-off. Currents can vary significantly on this exposed side, ranging from limited to stronger flows, depending on prevailing conditions. Divers venturing below 40 meters (130 ft) will find particularly impressive sponge and red algae growths, adding vibrant color to the deeper wall sections. Visibility typically ranges between 20-40 meters, often exceeding 30 meters (100 ft), allowing clear views of the extensive rock formations and underwater structures.
Dive Difficulty & Safety Guidelines
Understanding the potential hazards at Fungus Rock is crucial for a safe dive. On the open sea side of the rock, currents can be stronger and more variable than inside the bay, necessitating careful monitoring and appropriate dive planning. Divers should also remain vigilant for fishing nets, which have been reported at the site and can pose an entanglement risk. This location is strictly a boat dive, requiring proper coordination for access and egress. Due to the significant depths encountered and variable conditions, an advanced certification level is recommended for all divers.
