About the Bannerfish

The bannerfish, belonging to the genus Heniochus, is a striking group of marine ray-finned fish found throughout the Indo-Pacific. These true butterflyfishes, part of the family Chaetodontidae, are often recognized by a very distinctive feature: an elongated fourth spine in their dorsal fin, which can even form a flowing filament.

Adult bannerfish also possess supraorbital crests that develop into spines or horn-like protuberances, along with a noticeable hump or robust bony growth on the nape. Their genus name, Heniochus, is derived from Greek, meaning "carriage driver" or "coachman," a clear nod to that impressive, whip-like dorsal spine. While sharing a superficial resemblance to the Moorish Idol, bannerfish are not closely related, firmly placing them among the eight currently recognized species of butterflyfishes within their genus.
