What Divers Should Know About
Conger Eel

Conger eels represent a formidable genus of marine eels, recognized among the largest of their kind. Individuals can exceed two meters in length and weigh over 57 kilograms. These powerful predators typically present with a gray or black coloration, lack scales, and feature wide mouths armed with sturdy teeth.

Divers frequently encounter large congers during daylight hours, particularly in sections of the Mediterranean Sea, and they also inhabit both European and North American Atlantic coasts. While often observed, it is crucial to maintain a respectful distance; congers are predators capable of aggression. Documented incidents include a European conger, over 1.8 meters long, inflicting a severe bite on a diver at 25 meters depth. Observing these magnificent eels from afar is always the best approach.
