What Divers Should Know About
Flamboyant Cuttlefish

The Flamboyant Cuttlefish, Ascarosepion pfefferi, is a captivating cephalopod found across the tropical Indo-Pacific, from northern Australia to the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Despite its striking appearance, it remains relatively small, typically growing to a mantle length of up to 8 cm. Divers most frequently encounter these fascinating creatures on sand and mud substrates in shallow waters, though they can be found from 3 to 86 meters deep.

Unlike many of its free-swimming relatives, this cuttlefish is known for its distinctive "walking" behavior. Its unique cuttlebone structure allows it to amble across the seafloor using its lower arms, often rhythmically waving the wide membranes along them. Active during the day, the Flamboyant Cuttlefish is a master of camouflage, blending seamlessly into its surroundings while hunting. When disturbed, however, it transforms instantly, putting on a breathtaking display of black, dark brown, white, and vivid yellow patches, often with bright red arm-tips, a clear warning to potential predators.
