What Divers Should Know About
Ornate Ghost Pipefish
The ornate ghost pipefish, Solenostomus paradoxus, is a master of disguise. This fascinating species earned its common name "ghost" due to its incredible ability to blend seamlessly into its surroundings, often seeming to appear and disappear before your eyes. Their highly variable coloration, which can range from vibrant yellows and reds to deep browns and crimsons, allows them to mimic diverse marine life with remarkable precision.
Divers typically search for these elusive creatures along reef edges, especially those with some current, throughout the tropical Indo-West Pacific from the Red Sea to Tonga. You'll often find an ornate ghost pipefish adopting an upright posture, stationary among hosts like gorgonian corals, crinoids, or even floating weeds, making them incredibly challenging to spot. Females of this species can reach lengths of about 130 mm, with males being noticeably smaller. They usually lead solitary lives or are seen in pairs.
