Dive Site Overview

Plataforma offers an experience unlike typical natural reefs, often described by divers as navigating an underwater oil rig or even a sunken spaceship. The colossal hexagonal structure, once a floating fish farm known as "La Mariana," now rests tilted on the sandy bottom, creating an expansive artificial reef.

It collapsed during a storm, settling from a minimum depth of 12 meters (39 ft) down to 32-33 meters on one of its sides. Its metal frame and concrete columns have since become encrusted with marine growth, recruiting numerous species to the site. Located on the west side of Espardell islet, northeast of Formentera, it's accessible within a short boat ride, typically less than 20 minutes from local dive centers or around 30 minutes from Ibiza. A unique structure, its history makes it a special dive within the Mediterranean Sea.

Best Time to Dive

Seasonal patterns significantly influence diving conditions at Plataforma. The warmest and driest conditions are typically found during the summer months, from June through September. Air temperatures during this period average between 23.5°C and 26.7°C (74-80°F), with minimal rainfall, averaging less than 2 millimeters per month. Water temperatures can range from 14-28°C (57-82°F), offering comfortable diving in summer. Conversely, winters are cooler and wetter, with air temperatures ranging from 13.1°C to 14.3°C (56-58°F) between December and March, accompanied by higher average wave heights. Dive scores reflect this, being consistently 'Good' during the summer and 'Moderate' or 'Good' in the shoulder seasons.
