What Divers Should Know About
Giant Manta Ray

The Giant Manta Ray, Mobula birostris, commands attention as the largest ray species globally. These magnificent pelagic animals typically measure around 4.5 meters (15 feet) across their disc, though individuals exceeding 7 meters (23 feet) are not uncommon. Recognizable by their broad, flattened bodies and prominent cephalic fins flanking their large, forward-pointing mouth, they are efficient filter feeders of the open ocean.

Divers primarily encounter giant mantas in tropical and subtropical waters, often frequenting offshore oceanic islands or areas with nutrient-rich upwellings that concentrate their zooplankton prey. While largely ocean-going, these rays occasionally move closer to shore, where they might be observed basking serenely or swimming with unhurried grace. These intelligent creatures, possessing the largest brain of any fish, navigate vast distances, sometimes solo, sometimes in groups, making each encounter a unique privilege.
