What Divers Should Know About Mantis Shrimp

Among the most visually striking denizens of tropical and subtropical reefs, mantis shrimp showcase a remarkable diversity in coloration, from muted browns to multiple contrasting, vivid hues. These carnivorous marine crustaceans, typically around 10 cm in length, are important predators in shallow habitats. Despite their commonality, many species spend most of their lives sheltering within burrows and holes, making sightings a rewarding, albeit often brief, encounter for divers.

While most mantis shrimp remain modest in size, a few species such as the zebra mantis shrimp can impress at up to 38 cm. Their common name, "thumb splitters," highlights the formidable raptorial appendages they possess. These powerful limbs are either heavily mineralized clubs, capable of stunning prey, or sharp grasping forelimbs used to swiftly seize their quarry. Such power means caution is essential; these creatures can inflict painful wounds if handled incautiously.
