What Divers Should Know About
Rockfish
"Rockfish" is a wonderfully broad common name that divers will encounter across many oceans, though it doesn't refer to a single species or even closely related family. Instead, it's a catch-all term for various fish species united by one primary characteristic: their tendency to hide among rocks. This behavior makes them a frequent sight in rocky reefs and crevices worldwide, where they often blend seamlessly into their surroundings.
While the term "rockfish" can encompass a wide range of fish, from certain types of groupers to specific greenlings, it's important to recognize the incredible diversity and sometimes significant differences among them. For instance, some of the highly venomous stonefishes from the Indo-Pacific are commonly referred to as rockfish, underscoring the need for divers to maintain respectful distance and observe from afar. Their excellent camouflage and often stationary habits, coupled with their preferred rocky habitat, mean divers often need a keen eye to spot these masters of concealment.
