What Divers Should Know About
Green Turtle

Encountering a Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas) underwater is always a memorable experience. These large sea turtles, found throughout tropical and subtropical seas globally, are distinct in their diet as adults, being strictly herbivorous and primarily grazing on seagrass. This plant-based diet is actually the source of their common name, referring to the greenish fat found beneath their carapace, rather than the olive to black color of their shell.

When you spot one, likely in shallow lagoons over expansive seagrass beds, you'll witness a true giant of the reef. Mature individuals can reach an impressive 1.5 meters (5 feet) in length and typically weigh between 68 to 190 kg (150-419 pounds). These gentle giants are known for their longevity, with some living up to 90 years in the wild. Observing them leisurely forage provides a peaceful interaction, a testament to their critical role in maintaining healthy marine ecosystems.
