What Divers Should Know About
Lingcod
Gazing at a Lingcod, you'll immediately notice its formidable presence. With a prominent head often sporting a cirrus above each eye and a mouth extending past its eyes, this bottom-dweller commands attention. Their camouflage ranges from mottled gray and brown to striking blue or green, often spotted, helping them blend seamlessly into the ocean floor. These impressive fish can reach lengths of up to 152 centimeters (60 inches), making them a truly grand sight for any diver exploring the North American West Coast.
You'll typically encounter Lingcod hunkering down in rocky areas, their preferred habitat, or nestled among swaying kelp and eelgrass beds. These territorial residents are commonly found at depths ranging from a diver-friendly 10 to 100 meters (33–328 feet) along the Pacific coast, particularly abundant off British Columbia and Washington. Watch for their tell-tale large, canine-like teeth; these aggressive predators are known to consume almost anything they can fit into their formidable mouths, from other fish to octopus and crab.
