What Divers Should Know About
Sea Anemone

From the shallowest reefs to the deepest abyssal plains, sea anemones grace marine environments across all the world's oceans. These captivating creatures, often mistaken for plants, typically anchor themselves firmly to hard surfaces like rocks and coral, though some species prefer soft sediments, even burrowing in. A common sight for divers, these polyps display a columnar body topped with a beautiful oral disc fringed by a vibrant ring of tentacles. While most you'll spot are between 1 to 5 cm in diameter and 1.5 to 10 cm in length, don't be surprised to encounter truly massive individuals like Stichodactyla mertensii, which can stretch over a metre across!

Observing these marine invertebrates is always a treat, as their tentacles, armed with stinging cnidocytes, expand gracefully to capture passing prey. Far from being solitary, many anemone species engage in fascinating symbiotic relationships. Keep an eye out for the classic sight of a clownfish darting fearlessly among their tentacles, or perhaps a hermit crab adorned with an anemone – both examples of mutual benefit in the underwater world. Their striking colors and dynamic movements make them a highlight on any dive.
