What Divers Should Know About Humphead Parrotfish

The Humphead Parrotfish (Bolbometopon muricatum) is an unmistakable giant of the coral reef. This largest species of parrotfish can reach an impressive 1.3 meters (4.3 feet) in length and weigh over 46 kilograms (101 pounds), with some individuals growing even larger. Its distinctive bulbous forehead and often dark green coloration set it apart from other reef inhabitants. Adults are typically found patrolling clear outer lagoons and seaward reefs, generally no deeper than 30 meters (98 feet), across the Indo-Pacific from the Red Sea to the Great Barrier Reef.

Divers often spot these magnificent fish in small schools, though on healthy reefs, groups can swell to over 75 individuals. Their feeding habits are crucial to reef health; Humpheads are prolific grazers, consuming benthic algae and even live corals by ramming their sturdy heads against the reef structure. This constant bioerosion, where each adult ingests tons of reef carbonate annually, makes them a keystone species in many ecosystems.

As the day ends, look for these giants congregating in large groups to sleep within reef crevices, caves, or even shipwrecks. Occasionally, you might witness ritualized combat between males, characterized by head-on collisions that produce surprisingly loud jarring sounds beneath the surface. Their long lifespan, up to 40 years, combined with slow growth and delayed reproduction, highlights their vulnerability and the importance of responsible diving practices.
