About the Blacktip Shark

Look for the tell-tale dark tips on its fins to identify a Blacktip shark cruising the tropical and subtropical coastal waters. These requiem sharks favor depths of less than 30 meters over continental and insular shelves, often patrolling the vibrant drop-offs near coral reefs. They also frequent muddy bays, island lagoons, and even venture into estuaries and mangrove swamps. Typically, these elegant predators measure around 1.5 meters (4.9 ft), though larger individuals can reach up to 2.8 meters (9.2 ft).

Known for their energetic hunting style, Blacktip sharks are swift piscivores. They are uniquely famous for spinning leaps out of the water when attacking schools of small fish—a spectacular sight if you're lucky enough to witness it. While generally described as timid compared to larger requiem sharks, their disposition can shift to aggressive in the presence of food. Both juveniles and adults form groups of varying sizes, which you might encounter on your dives.
